Dogfish Head 60 minute/Founders Dry Hopped Ale/Schlafly Dry Hopped APA

Dogfish Head 60min
I had another go at the Dogfish Head 60 minute - now it wasn't the full 12 oz., more like a 6 oz. To me what sets this IPA apart from others is its rusty jagged edge. It's rough. Loaded with hops, this guy can make the trip. Aftertaste left me with a grapefruit rind in my mouth.
I do like the Dogfish Head 60 minute. I appreciate the science that went into the creation of this brew. However, I'm probably not going to spend much more time on this one because there are other I/APAs out there that have quality taste and cost less.

Founders Dry Hopped Ale
Another go at this one, I really enjoyed this guy. It must have its own cleaning crew because it finishes cleaner than when it started. Decent head, nice color. Compared to the DFH 60 min, he's a domesticated dog - he can get a little rowdy but most of the time he's tame. It has less of a grapefruit aftertaste.

Schlafly Dry Hopped APA
Lastly, I do like this one the best of the three. For a couple of reasons: 1) price 2)since I live in STL - availability 3) much smoother and more refined without losing the hop sense 4) minimal grapefruit aftertaste.
I had several of these with a friend, pizza, and a great football game.

  1. that friend would be me. i don't know why i mention that since it is only the two of us on here.
I agree with the C key on this. After a second go on the dogfish head, i wasn't as impressed. i would like to see if the other stuff they have is any better and just bought the world wide stout to bring to the next meeting.
Founders was an ipa that i could have a few of at a time and still not be bombed by the hops. It does finish softly and for that i am grinning.

I don't have much to say about the APA other than it has been wildly inconsistent for me. Awhile back i had a blind tasting of it and several other beers, ipa's, and it was the worst we had. I was shocked when we found that it was the APA.However, after that i have had some great experiences with it. Was it a bad bottle? is it good only if not stacked up against others at the same time? who knows.
But, we had it during the superbowl and that thing is the only reason i didn't cry at the end.

  2. here, here on the inconsistency of the APA. it was my favorite hoppy ale for some time in kansas city. the wife made some snapfish greeting cards for me as a birthday present: the cards feature a pint of schlafly APA and my quote, "be t'ankful for the goodness of pints in the land of the living." i treasured that APA, driving across kansas city every monday night with the wife for buy one get one burgers and cheap pints at charlie hooper's. (dear lord, i miss that place).

but then when the baker and seth and i popped tops in fayetteville, the APA only tasted like melted metallica. way bitter. no fruit. all copper. then i had the same experience at the schlafly taproom.

however, i refuse to give up on this beer. i have loved it for too long for all of church key's reasons.

ps. last night i drank a bottle of lone star. that's all i have to say about that.

  3. The Schlafly APA is legendary in my fridge. Other beers cower in the shadow of this fearsome beverage. It's not the best beer that ever slipped past my teeth, but it is a consistent companion.

  4. What about Three Floyds? I really enjoyed that the first and second time. The Mendocino Imperial IPA was downed by Tim and I while we played disc golf in the snow...maybe that will give it a special place in my liver.
